About

The group's official bio, written to be suitable for your venue's publicity needs . . .

Over a decade ago, four public school educators with a love of jazz and classic American songs -- plus a desire to contribute to the quality of life in Upper Michigan -- joined together to form the Phil Lynch Quartet. Their unique musical endeavor is still going strong, bringing its brand of musical joy to happy listeners throughout the region.

The quartet presents a fun and swinging mix of vocal "standards" (Sinatra-era tunes), instrumental classics featuring trumpet, and original songs. Its repertoire ranges from Gershwin, Basie, and Miles Davis, to the Beatles and Disney . . . all in the key of jazz. The newest addition to the quartet’s extensive playlist is Phil’s Upper Michigan Suite, an instrumental composition of four movements, each highlighting a different aspect of Upper Michigan’s unique locale and awesome history.

Since 2004 the Phil Lynch Quartet has brought happiness to club patrons, private parties, concert audiences and festival-goers throughout Upper Michigan and the northern Lower Peninsula. Having played in such a variety of settings, Phil and the quartet know how to tailor their set-list to be most appropriate to an audience’s needs.

The quartet has joked for years that an alternate band name might have been “The Schoolteachers,” since the members are all current or former educators. Phil Lynch, social studies instructor at Escanaba Schools, does the writing/arranging, plays piano, and sings;  Greg Hunt, music director emeritus of Norway Schools, is on drums; John Beck, Escanaba High School vocal music director, handles the bass; and Craig Recla, Iron Mountain director of instrumental music, plays trumpet and guitar.

The Phil Lynch Quartet has played extensively in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, including many repeat engagements at Iron Mountain’s “Out to Lunch” concert series, Escanaba’s Music Mondays and Marina Fest, Norway’s summer concert series, and the Pine Grove Country Club. Summer 2015 saw the group’s first tour, playing to enthusiastic outdoor audiences in Mackinaw City and Oscoda. In 2016, in addition to their normal summer workload, the group made a mini-tour of three historic UP venues: the Calumet, Braumart, and Crystal Theatres. Of special note was the premier of Phil's original Upper Michigan Suite, a set of four instrumental pieces focusing on UP sites and their heritage. In 2018 the group has added a few blues to its repertoire with Craig Recla handling the singing and Phil modeling a classic Hammond B3 organ sound underneath it all.

The quartet is always open to performance possibilities in all kinds of settings including feature performances and quieter background music. Phil may be contacted at phillynch42@gmail.com or (906) 786-2396. Booking agent Greg Hunt is at ghunt@norwaymi.com and (906) 282-3993.
